Love in the Nursery

February the month of Love has brought a new love into our lives at home with the addition of our newest granddaughter, Isabella Rose. Isabella is the daughter of our daughter Kristi and her husband Jeff and she joined the family last Tuesday the 7th. A special Valentine Day will be celebrated by her parents this year I'm sure.

When showing your special Valentine how much you Love him or her how about giving them a gift which will show that Love all year? Flowers and Chocolates are welcome gifts yet a gift that reflects your Love each & every day they look out the window and watch it grow is so rewarding.

Pick a tree which bears fruit, as they bite into it every time they will remember your Love. Or how about a rose in their favorite color? Did you take a special trip together or hope to one day? Plant something which will remind you of the area you went or wish to go to. France maybe? Plant a lavender. Italy? How about a wine grape? Or if you and your Love enjoy cooking together you can plant & grow a vegetable and herb garden. Sharing in growing and cooking what you eat is truly rewarding.

My insights and Tiger's Tips

What a crazy weather month we have had this January. Rain and cold then sunny and hot with today being a perfect spring day. It can be hard on your garden so remember to check your plants for any damage. If you did get some frost do not cut your plants yet, let them go even if they are ugly until the weather stays consistent.

As we began the new year with a clean up at the nursery, just like at home, once you remove the holiday tree and decorations it's time to spruce up the place. Our greenhouse is getting some new coats of paints, let me know what you think of the colors. The upper lot pottery section has been reorganized to make shopping easier and our new line of glazed pottery is getting great reviews.

Roses are in and canned up, we are still expecting our order from David Austin to arrive any day. I selected fragrant varieties, don't you wish rose tags had scratch & sniff spots? Stone fruit trees, Japanese Maples, Wisteria and the very popular Weeping Mulberries are also canned and resting for the winter. But don't wait until spring to get them in your garden they would appreciate a new home while they rest.

Oh yes I can't forget the chickens. Willow, Mr. Rooster is very protective of his ladies so keep an eye out when walking around. Maggie and Ash are plump and happy ladies who each lay an egg every day. Spend some time just watching them you surely will walk away laughing.

Great gift idea

Tiger's Plant for November

Tiger took time out of setting up our Christmas wonderland to select a plant for the month of November. Even though this plant flowers in the summer you will want it for the foliage which right now just yells "Autumn".

Hibiscus acetosella
Is a tropical hibiscus grown mostly for its foliage. To
me the flower is inconsequential or at best, a nice conversation item. With its psychedelic looking foliage that comes to life during the summer months. The leaves will show red, purple, and a creamy variegation.
This plant will be a great show piece in any garden or container.

Plant Needs: Sun Water: average This plant reaches about 4' and is cold hardy down to 30 degrees. It does like well drained soil

Holidays at the nursery.

Every November we scare many of you, unintentionally that is. No we are not going out of business. We begin moving everything from 4" vegetables, 5 gallon fruit trees, tables and tables of bedding color and tons of pottery from the upper lot. All plants, tables, pots get new homes on the west side, south side, and inside of the nursery. Our upper lot becomes Christmas Wonderland.

Living Christmas trees are already in the nursery,with our first load of fresh cut Christmas trees (no 15 cent tax this year) arriving on Friday, November 18th. Poinsettias will start coming in next week along with wreaths and garland.

If you like paperwhites for the holidays you will want to stagger their planting times. Give them as hostess gifts right before they open completely. Amaryllis bulbs in red, white and a red with white are in our bulb area. While already sprouted ones are on the greenhouse tables.

Holiday plants which are perfect for decorating and gift giving are the Christmas Cactus,
we have them in our greenhouse and Cyclamen on our bedding tables. Succulent wreaths can be hung on walls or doors and left sitting on a table with a candle in the middle.

Grow your own Christmas tree, we have everything you need in a little brown bag. How about a gift for the cook on your list? Rosemary comes in various shapes and sizes.

Let's not get too far ahead of the holidays, we still have Thanksgiving to enjoy. China planted up some paperwhites which if the weather cooperates may be just ready for gift giving to your Thanksgiving hostess. Or select one of our newest glazed pots and let her plant you a gift with flowers and herbs, sage is always needed when cooking those juicy turkeys.

If you need decorating ideas for your Thanksgiving table you will certainly want to go to the Mission Hills Garden Club's November meeting, you may even win your holiday table centerpiece.

I love this time of year, cool clear days, warm soups, and the smells of fireplaces as you walk through neighborhoods. I am Thankful for my health which allows me to enjoy these simple things.

Tiger's Tips for October

Most people do their planting in the Spring when days are longer and warmer. However, did you know that planting in the Fall is the most ideal time?

80% of the plant's root growth occurs in late summer early fall. Milder daytime temperatures along with a bit more dependable rainfall help the plants to establish themselves.
Your garden's soil is warmer, again easier on root growth.
Pest and disease usually lessen with cooling temperatures.

My tip for this month is that you take advantage of what nature provides and plant those larger shade and fruit trees you've been thinking about. For additional fall planting tips stop by the nursery and pick up my guide, broken down by early, middle, and late October.

A fun family project for this month, plant a pumpkin. No I don't mean plant a seed and grow a pumpkin. I mean buy a medium sized pumpkin cut off the top scoop out the seeds, add soil and annual fall color. Perfect fall decoration. Remember to sit your pumpkin on a dish so it doesn't mark your table. Enjoy inside for a dinner party than place it in your garden. As it breaks down let it compost into your soil.

Our fall season is here, enjoy the colors with an array of mums, pansies, violas. Spruce up your containers or garden beds. Decorate your home's walk way or porch with assorted shapes, and colors of pumpkins, gourds and cornstalks. We do have Seasons in San Diego.

Roses 2012

We have our 2012 Rose Selections posted, you may pre-book now for delivery beginning in January 2012. Roses are shipped bare root, or picked up at the nursery planted.

This is going to be a crazy couple of years as we have seen drastic changes within the rose growers industry. If you see a rose you like you may want to book it now. Shortages happen due to crop failures, the grower oversells, and weather doesn't allow harvesting.

We process our orders as they were received, so again order early. If we are unable to fill your order you will be contacted for any substitutions. If you live in a part of the country where you can't plant in January we will grow out your rose, cut it back and ship when you are ready. If we do this than we process your payment in January so we can pull the rose from stock.

After we posted out 2012 selections on our website we received notice that we may be able to receive in some David Austin English roses. Unable to get them on our website we will post them on our Facebook page as soon as they are confirmed. We can't bring them all in so it is always a hard decision when we sit down to choose.

David Austin English roses form shapely shrubs with bushy growth, renowned for their strong & diverse fragrances. These roses are repeat bloomers, providing longer bloom season. Bred for vigor and disease resistance. Also perform well in partial shady conditions along with being quite happy in containers. Staghorn Fern

Staghorn ferns were at one time considered a very difficult plant to grow yet with just a little care you too can enjoy their beauty.

Staghorn does best mounted on a board using moss to protect their roots. Hang in an area with bright light and good air circulation. They really enjoy the warmth and humidity during the summer months. Water regularly during growing season Spring thru Fall, increasing as needed if temperatures rise.

Feed regularly, follow directions depending on what fertilizer you use. During the growing season you can use liquid food such as Fish Emulsion and on occasion give your Staghorn a banana peel which will slowly breakdown.

Chicken Update

When Fausto first brought in these 3 little chicks they fit into the palm of my hand. We were able to keep them by the cash register area where everyone got to see them.

After a couple of weeks they began to test their wings and jump down from their little coop. Not able to fly back up they would sit, flap their wings and make alot of noise until one of us would pick them up.

Then construction began on their condominium complex. Each of them has their own nesting area for when they are older. They have a ramp and places to hide. Moved outdoors they seem to be enjoying the warm summer days, they have plenty of shade, water and scratch. Whenever someone goes down to see them they get all excited.

Because Fausto bought the chickens and he is on the committee to plant trees in San Diego I think he helped sway the votes to name them after trees.
Ash appropriately is the black chicken, Willow is the reddish brown chicken, and Maggie (short for Magnolia) is the lighter one of them all.

Sooner than later these little ladies will be out in the nursery, eating bugs and keeping the kids happy. And for those who are concerned, so far Socks (nursery cat) isn't showing any interest. And with 3 against 1 I think she will keep her distance.

Smell me, Touch me, Feed me

Fausto and I went on a shopping trip this morning to Booman Florals in Vista. We brought back some very cool plants. Plants that make you stop and take a second look, you will want to touch them, smell them and feed them.

Carniverous plants in 4" and 6" are the Feed Me plants.

Looking like a cluster of bear traps, the Venus Flytrap lies in wait for its victims. Insects are attracted by a sweet nectar inside the trap. There, on each side of the trap, are three dark trigger hairs, and they are extremely sensitive.

When an insect touches a trigger hair once, nothing apparently happens. The plant has been alerted, but the hair mechanism could have been activated by the wind, or a piece of dust. When the prey brushes a trigger hair again, that second signal causes a reaction; nerve-like electrical impulses pass through the plant, and the trap closes instantly. The 'teeth' called cilia, interlock and form a cage, enclosing the victim.

Small insects can easily crawl out between the cilia. This is the plant's method of throwing back the small fish, since it would take more energy to digest a tiny insect than could be gained from consuming it. But larger insects struggle to get out, repeatedly touching the trigger hairs. These signals cause the trap to close completely, totally sealing in the prey. The traps fills with liquid and the victim drowns.

The liquid, a digestive enzyme, breaks down the soft parts of the insect so the plant can absorb it. This process takes several days. When the plant has digested all of the insect it can use, the trap reopens, exposing the insect's skeletal shell, which is soon swept away by wind or rain. If the trap was mechanically triggered and captured no prey, it reopens within a day or so.

For the Touch Me plant we brought in Mimosa 'sensitive plant', if you show this plant to your child believe me they will try to close every similar plant on their walks.Our kids first experienced this plant in Hawaii and for the rest of the trip they would touch every plant to see if it was also magical.

Last but not least we brought in one of my favorite orchids, Coconut Cream Pie, yes it smells like Coconut. This variety is just beginning to bloom you will want to hang it in a protected area outside your front door or a window so the fragrance drifts in. Another very fragrant plant in stock is a Brazilian Orchid with purple blooms. The truck smelled heavenly on the trip home.

June Gloom?

As I write this it is almost June 1, 2011. The last day of May was a gorgeous day at the nursery. The wind didn't pick up until later in the afternoon which gave us a chance to get everything watered before the smaller plants tumbled over.

By the time you read this we will have flipped the calender to June. I am hoping to not see any June gloom in the near future. We pay sunshine tax here in San Diego and we expect to get 100% return on our investments right? Our bodies and our gardens enjoy the warm sunshine.

While I was out taking inventory, we sold a lot of vegetables over the 3 day weekend, there were hummingbirds flying right next to me getting nectar from the lantana. As they flew about I thought; it is like going to the Soup Plantation for them so many choices.

Some of you might not have enough planting area for the hummers to come and have lunch, maybe you live in an apartment or condominium, yet you can feed them by hanging a feeder. One variety we stock is from a company which really believes in it's product, Best-1 Hummingbird Feeder. For the next couple of weeks I will be offering free nectar with the purchase of a Best-1 Hummingbird Feeder ($21.99 style). Open your own smorgasbord, sit back and watch the beauty unfold.

What else is unfolding in your garden this month? How about all those vegetables you planted in March, April and May? You should have already harvested strawberries, cucumbers, chard, lettuce and enjoyed fresh herbs in your dishes. With the warmth from the sun your eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, corn and so much more should be ripening up. I love the garden boxes we have planted at the nursery, not only are they easy to garden in but the plants are producing like crazy. We enjoy the cucumber water at our Urban Farmstyle seminars, Tiger has cooked brite lights chard for his family, everyone nibbles on the strawberries and we are watching the tomatoes which any day now will be snacked on by one or all of us. Fresh lemons are squeezed into ice-tea and the apples are changing from green to red.

I just love this time of year, so much is fresh and new. Life unfolds with the warmth of the sun.

Tiger's Tips for May

Spring is now in full swing and it is time. If you haven't already treated yourself to one new plant I invite you to come in and find just the right one for your garden. My favorite as I write my tips for this month is the Supertunia Pretty Much Picasso, with a green throat and red outer lips it is striking.

Give yourself everlasting flowers by cutting and drying ones which are blooming now, example statice, strawflowers and hydrangeas.

Another treat you and the butterflies will enjoy is an easy to maintain butterfly garden, come in and see the Asclepias and Buddleias.

Don't have space but want to grow vegetables? New product in the nursery is the Grodan Hugo Grow Cube. Horticultural stone wool is used the world over by both hydroponics and soil gardeners, it provides enough growing volume to support a large plant. Made in Denmark this cube is 6x6x6, stop in and I'll be happy to show you how it works.

Towards the end of this month you need to really pay attention to any roses in your garden, as the June gloom begins to roll in especially along the coastal areas. Deadhead and trim unsightly leaves then spray them with Serenade Disease Control.

Insects this month in your garden

What a beautiful start to the month of May, we have been enjoying sunshine and warm breezes from the east for the last couple of days. If you are out walking thru your neighborhood you will begin noticing almost every day there is a new flower blooming. Along with the blooms come the songbirds singing and hummingbirds humming as they also enjoy springtime. What else is that you see on your new tender growth? Aphids of course, they like the tenderest part of plants and seem to appear overnight. How to control or get rid of them?

First keep your plants fed and healthy, just like people the healthier a plant is the easier it is for it to fight insects and disease. Then if you get aphids you may simply spray them off with a strong spray from the garden hose or release ladybugs to do the trick.

When releasing ladybugs do it in the evening, water the garden first and release them at the base of your plants so they work their way up. They will rest for the evening and wake up to a buffet the next morning. If you release them in the middle of the day ladybugs will fly away to a cooler shady spot and won't eat away your aphids.

Want the ultimate predator insect in your garden? Now is the time to pick up egg cases which will hatch between 50 to 200 baby Praying Mantids. This carnivorous insect will keep the beetle, cricket and grasshopper population under control but be forewarned they also will eat butterflies if nothing else is around.

Are there sprays to use instead of beneficial insects? Yes you can use organic products such as Insecticidal Soap and Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew which contains Spinosad. Both are approved by the EPA for organic gardening.

Remember though not all bugs are bad bugs so know what you have before you spray.

Tiger's tips for April

Tiger's project this month is redwood garden boxes. These beautiful raised planters are easy to assemble and store away when not planted. Once assembled fill your box with Green All Soil Booster, remember soil is very important when planting especially for your edible gardens.

Now what to plant? I am going to concentrate on edibles for this project so I'll pick ones that I know myself and my family will eat. Tomatoes are 1st on the list and we had at least 30 different varieties last count. By putting one in each corner I have room for them to grow up through the cages. In the middle I'll pick a pepper or two, along one edge some beans that can hang over and for fun colors a packet of carrots. With Tassia becoming old enough to begin food we'll introduce her to an array of carrots colors and flavors. Don't forget to add Marigolds or Cosmos to help keep those pesky insects away.

With the rains behind us, we hope, you will want to start replacing your cool season flowers with heat lovers. Zinnias, coleus, marigolds, and Fausto's favorite Godetia.

Plant taller delphiniums to the back and lower calibrochias to the front. Watch our sidewalk planter begin blooming over the next few weeks.

If you need more bees in your garden to help pollinate your fruits and vegetables consider Agastache, Lavenders, Catmint and Penstemons. Remember to feed your whole garden as it emerges from the winter chill. Again your soil is very important so you will want to use DynoEarth Humic Acid every quarter.

One of our bedding plant growers, Do Rights, just released a new Cosmo and we'll be having it on our tables this week hopefully. I love Cosmos for their simplicity with growing and the way they wave in the warm spring and summer breezes.

Tiger's Tips for March

Tiger has been busy not just at the nursery but outside doing a pretty large landscape job downtown yet he still has time to give us his tips for the month.
This is a good month to pay attention to your houseplants. It may have been awhile since you've repotted them so be sure to check and see if now is the time. Also feed them and consider adding a systemic for houseplants to keep those pesky little critters in check.
With temperatures warming watch for slugs & snails on your new plantings, Sluggo is an organic way to control them.

Pick up shamrocks for your St. Patrick parties or office gifts.

If you've been thinking of raised bed gardening come in and see our garden boxes which we have planted up. We offer these boxes unassembled or for a minimal fee we can assemble and deliver them to your home.

Gift yourself a gift on the first day of spring, March 20th plant a new flower. One that I am beginning to enjoy more each year is the Arctotis, African Daisy. A native to South Africa and North Angola these showy perennial plants are noted for their bright colored blooms. They enjoy a dry spot in the gawith full sun and cool nights. These flowers really show their beauty in the sunlight, then as they begin to seed they will curve their flowerhead down. Once the seeds are ready to be blown away by the wind they will stand up straight and release big fluffy seeds into the air. Want a peek into new roses for 2012? We have four that will be coming into bloom as we get warmer weather. One of the roses speaks of weather....

Stormy Weather:(PPAF) Hues of stormy blue flash from the depths of mysterious deep smokey purple blooms, the reverse side of the petals touched with lightning bolts of cloudy white for added special effects. The big clusters of double blossoms are set against loads of gray-green leaves that stay clean and attractive due to very good disease resistance. A dramatic rose for display- ing against light colored backgrounds or for contrasting with brightly hued annuals and perennials. Flower Size: 3-1/2 to 4-1/2". Fragrance: Moderate spice. Hybridizer: Orard, 2012.

How do you like your latte? Koko Loko might fit into your garden with it's milky chocolate buds opening into a soft lavender. Long lasting on the bush and in
your vase, fragrance is mild.

Now if you are looking for something that shouts Hello Look at Me! than All a Twitter is your miniature rose. The sparkling orange blooms stand out against the deep glossy green leaves.

The one I am really looking forward to is Sugar Moon, this rose will glow like the moon and the fragrance is why I believe we have roses. Intense true rose fragrance, it is a repeat bloomer and disease resistant.

South African necklace

When we went to South Africa a few years back my best friend who loves to shop brought back some of these really funky necklaces. You can put them together, twist them or wear them straight. We have them for sale at Mission Hills Nursery, once you've played with them you will need to have one or 2 or 3 for yourself. I was at a Christmas party one year wearing 2 when a woman came up to me and really really liked them, I took them off and gave them to her. A nice surprise gift for her.

Nature's Perfume

March 1st begins our Tuesday Tastings. From 4:00 - 6:00 we will be pouring, tasting, and enjoying friendships. Stop in with a girlfriend to do a little garden shopping before going home. Each week we will highlight a different plant. Our first night's guest plant was picked to share with you my Classic friends.

Classic Woman hybrid tea rose. This fragrant rose was selected by the editor of Traditional Home magazine in honor of their Classic Woman award. This award honors women of exemplary volunteerism and community service.

One of my classic friends will take home this rose, to win your chance you do need to attend our Tuesday Tastings each week during March. Anigozanthos

Anigozanthos commonly known as Kangaroo Paw plant is from western Australia. These hardy perennial plants are noted for their unique long lasting blooms. The tubular flowers are covered in velvety hairs and open at the apex with 6 claw like structures. Most common colors are red and yellow while oranges and greens are becoming favorites.

According to Angus Steward, Australian plant breeder, to get the most out of your Kangaroo paw grow them in full sun and be sure your soil drains well. Considered water thrifty during early spring & summer if you give them an extra drink you will extend the bloom season. Also dead heading promotes new flower spikes. Prune aggressively after the bloom season by cutting your plant back to the ground, not only does this promote new growth it helps eliminate possible diseases or fungus.

As we begin a new year and new seminars we are excited to have our neighbor/chef Liz be our first guest Chef. Liz will show us how to prepare a winter soup using a main ingredient which you can grow in your garden. You will also learn how to grow this ingredient and take one home to plant.

Seminar will begin at 11:30 and advance reservations are requested as we need to be sure and have enough soup for everyone to sample. Please come in and join us, I am looking forward to different chefs and different recipes all using at least one ingredient you can grow in your home garden. January in the Garden

January is the month you see rows and rows of sticks in black nursery pots, what are these you may ask yourself as you wander thru Mission Hills Nursery. Many stone fruit trees and deciduous trees that are dormant come into nurseries as sticks without any clothing (leaves) or pants (pots). We plant them up so they can begin to wake up and expand their roots prior to putting on a spring show for you in your home garden.
If you have always wanted an orchard but are limited in space your garden is suitable for EZ-Pick fruit trees from L.E. Cooke. While the standard fruit trees grows 20-30' EZ-Pick fruit trees stay around 6-12' with most of the fruit being reachable in the 4-7' range. By having a smaller tree you are able to plant multiple varieties providing your family with different fruit throughout the year.

Two of the most unusual dormant trees we bring in are the Snow Fountains Flowering Cherry from L.E. Cooke and weeping Mulberry. Flowering Cherry says spring with a carpet of white blossoms while the Mulberry provides some very yummy edible fruit. Each are structurally artistic during the winter months and beautiful the rest of the year.

You also will see over 500 other pots with shorter sticks coming out of them, these are roses. Even though it is hard to buy a new rose without actually seeing and smelling the flower now is the best time to get them into your garden. We have been buying many of our roses year after year from Weeks Roses, they have been growing roses for over 73 years so they do know how to do it. Today we saw the sun all day, first time in too long if you ask me. The plants are enjoying the warmth as much as we are. If you have been inside too long this winter this is the weekend you will want to get out in your garden. The soil is still soft from our rains making weed pulling and hole digging an easier task. Get dirty this weekend and we are open Monday in case you are one of the lucky ones who gets and extra day off.

Not an End It's a Beginning

As we prepare to turn the calendar some see it as the end of a year, while others see it as a new beginning. I think this year I will be one who sees it as a new beginning. Just as in a garden when you put in a new seed or seedling, you will watch life unfold and begin. Nurture your garden and you will nurture your soul. When we allow ourselves to be at peace we are able to achieve so much more than when we worry.

A gift you can give yourself every day in 2011 is to walk thru the nursery smelling and touching the flowers, petting Reina and Socks, listening to the birds sing and you will leave a bit more peaceful.

Turning 153

Sansevierias

Fausto and I found a grower who specializes in Sansevierias, we went on a buying trip this morning and came back with an array of them. If you don't know Sansevierias it is a plant you should come in and learn about. Very very easy to care for and you are surprised when it blooms. The fragrance on the cylindica varieties is similar to a jasmine mixed with gardenia, just a slight release as your home warms up.

We found 2 varieties which we won't be able to bring in until next year, one has black markings while the other is a reddish variety.
Once you begin collecting them you will be hooked.

Growing Conditions:

Light:Bright, filtered light, but highly tolerant.
Water: Can survive long periods of drought. Water monthly or less in winter, weekly or every other week in summer.
Temperature: Above 50ºF, but can survive cold spells.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus mix.
Fertilizer: Feed during growing season. Do not feed during winter.

I have mine at home in a north west window and put it in the shower once a month to wash and water, have to say I love this plant.

Naked Trees and what to do with them

As I write this blog it is gray and chilly out, not the way it should be for the last official summer holiday. Many of you have come in and said your tomato crops this year were not very productive, it's nothing you did wrong it is what was missing...sunshine. Now that we are heading into cooler days and chilly evenings you can start thinking of your fall/winter vegetable crops. Lettuces along with cabbages and kales are on the tables, peas, cauliflower, and broccoli starts will be arriving weekly. I'll be switching my garden box over in the next couple of weeks removing the tiny tomatoes which we munch on, pulling up the strawberries and adding an assortment of peas to give us afternoon treats.

A friend and customer has a cooking blog scheduled to go on line this fall, she grows many herbs and vegetables which have been purchased at Mission Hills Nursery so if she says okay I'll provide a link to her site, from the recipes I've seen things look pretty yummy.

If you have an extra herbs & or vegetables from your garden that you don't know what to do with please bring them in and share with others. We will be happy to set up an area, remember the sharing table when you were in school? It usually had more apples and less cookies but eventually someone wanted them, same will happen here, there is always someone who can use more zucchini.

Chemicals on your shelves

Well most of us have switched over to organics when it comes to insecticides, fungicides, and fertilizers there are some who still have chemicals sitting on their garden shelves. I would like to suggest that when you have the need to apply an insecticide or fungicide you check what you have first and use it, yes even if it is a chemical product. If applied correctly this product will be put to better use than disposing in our landfills or improperly down our water system.

Yet if the product has expired or been exposed to the elements and compromised it's usefulness then you should discard it by contacting your local hazardous waste companies.

Name Brands or Personal Recommendations

In our industry there is a lot of time, money and research put into name brands of plants. As an owner of an independent garden center we are often "told" by marketing companies that name brands sell over others. It is our belief that even though a company has done the marketing of their product it must still perform to our expectations. We sell what we believe in. When a new plant or product comes on the market we will bring it in and try it, now if it does not perform as we expect it to than you won't see it restocked.

New plant introductio ns are always like waiting for Christmas. We get teased at shows with these new plants knowing it will be another season or year before we can bring them to you. What we try to find are the unusual plants, remember when we first brought in Euphorbia Diamond Frost and how excited we were.

How about Bacopa? This plant has only gotten better, it is still one we suggest regularly. Now you can get Bacopa in purple along with white.

Now my question to you the consumer is..........
do you buy based upon brand names? Proven Winners, Monrovia, Miracle Gro to give you some examples. Or do you buy based upon personal recommendations from people you are buying from or fellow gardeners?
this is being debated within our industry and I would love your feedback so I can pass along how our customers feel.

Hawaiian Vacation at Home

With an increase in humidity I've felt like I should be on a tropical vacation. This is possible, without having to pack your luggage, get to the airport 2 hours early and sit on a plane for another 3-5 hours. Garden Path Signs

Bullets into Garden Path Signs? Who would have thought used bullet casings and other military and industrial scrap could be turned into beautiful and whimsical garden pieces. Yet one of our suppliers has done just that.

We have in stock some very nice heavy Garden Path Signs, one style I selected based upon our 2 cats Socks and Reina. I imagine during the evenings when we have all gone home that the 2 of them roam the nursery and stop to smell the flowers.

Have you seen all the butterflies fluttering through the nursery? I just had to get a sign which gives them the right-a-way.

Both signs come in a decorative box perfect for a gift to someone else or yourself, we need to treat ourselves occasionally right? If your indoor plants need a little pizaaz you should add a Shroomie, these ceramic mushrooms will bring a smile to your face every time you look at them. Easy to imagine a little garden fairy hanging out below them.

Seeds are Restocked

Our seed racks are full with our 2010-2011 varieties. One which seems pretty strange if you really think about it is a seed for seedless watermelon. Ferry Morse has one called Ultra Cool Hybrid, claims to be sweet & seedless. A pollinizer is required and they recommend Sugar Baby, so be sure to pick up both varieties for best results.

The attached photo isn't what your watermelon will look like, I just thought it was a fun way to get your attention.

Our Ferry Morse lines consist of their regular choices along with an Organic Line and Heirloom Line, the pictures alone make me what to plant them. Everything looks so yummy, and you know you and trust the quality of their seeds. One variety we sell out of and reorder all year is the Cat Treats, even my cat at home Hunter enjoys this. I plant a few seeds every week so she always has a new crop growing out of her flower pot.

Another best seller is Basil, just writing about it I'm able to smell this wonderful herb, maybe we'll have to make up a tomato & basil salad this evening. How simple is this recipe, if you haven't tried it or one similar you really should treat yourself to it.

vine ripe tomatoes, cut into bite size pieces or use the cherry ones
a handful of fresh basil leaves, torn into bite size pieces also
blend together a minced clove of garlic with about 2 tablespoons each of extra virgin olive oil and a rich balsamic vinegar.
pour this over the tomatoes and basil and let sit for a little while at room temperature
add salt & pepper to taste if necessary

Enjoy this with some fresh mozzarella a crusty loaf of bread and of course a glass of wine. Sit outside in your garden and reflect on our sunshine which has finally stayed around for a few days.

Our Monarchs

I felt like a mother last week watching her children go off to school. When I went to work the chrysalis' were still hanging wrapped up, by the middle of the day they emerged as beautiful butterflies. We watched as the first one crawled up the side of their temporary home and fell back down. After a few attempts he/she reached the outside top and began to test his wings. Within a couple of minutes he felt confident enough to fly away, and out of the greenhouse he went.

Our second one seemed to be a little less confident in how to climb out, yes I know eventually she would be able to, so I helped by lifting the branch up and laid it on top of their home. She then tested her wings yet didn't seem to be in too much of a hurry to leave the nest. We enjoyed watching her, something like watching your youngster take that first ride without training wheels. I felt proud when she flew away. Later in the afternoon I want to believe she came back and hung around the greenhouse for a little while, then off to begin the next cycle.

As I write this posting we have 2 more chrysalis inside and I'm sure others throughout the nursery. Please remember to watch before you spray if you think your plants are being eaten by worms, we need to give up a little foliage to be rewarded with beautiful butterflies.

The Life of a Monarch

We sell alot and I mean alot of Asclepia Plants, also known as Milkweed. People put this plant in their yard knowing it will be devoured by the caterpillars. Early this month we found 2 such caterpillars on one of the plants and decided to watch them. Fausto was able to capture the second one as it turned into the green chrysalis doing what is described as the wiggle-jiggle dance.

I believe we may be watching the 3rd generation of 4. Each of the first 3 generations live from two to six weeks as an adult. With the 4th generation living six to eight months here in Southern California. They then begin the whole generation cycle over.

When researching more about this total body change I came across a really fun and informative website on the magical metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly

In about 3-4 days we should be seeing the next stage, if you want to view them as a chrysalis you should stop in soon.

Victory Garden Winners

Congratulations to Alexis and Tyler who have been married just 3 years and homeowners for just one year on their first Victory Garden. Their raised beds are beginning to provide them with a summer time harvest. Newly planted potatoes, onions, eggplant, squash, and tomatoes will be sharing space with thyme, basil, tarragon, rosemary and an abundance of other herbs. Keep up with controlling the weeds, feed regularly using E.B. Stone Organic fertilizer and you will have more than enough to feed your family.

Dirt Under Your Nails

I am part of a group of ladies that try and get together at least one time per month for a ladies only event. Being the only one who works in the outdoor world I am at times embarrassed by the look of my hands, especially my fingernails. Most of the group keeps their nails manicured and polished, putting mine to shame. Yet today as I was preparing our balcony planter box I realized my nails are not to be ashamed of but to be proud of.

Working with my hands, getting them dirty and scratched while tending to my garden is part of the rewards that I will reap when I bring the fresh herbs inside for dinner. Have you picked a bunch of aromatic basil for pasta lately? Or enjoyed a refreshing Mojito with freshly bruised mint leaves? Even my cat enjoys the planter box as she gets a little corner for her kitty grass.

Getting your hands dirty can be therapeutic and is less expensive than going to a therapist.
Most of what we eat has a connection to the soil, whether it be vegetable, fruit, or even animal so we want to have the best soil for the best results. How better to know how good your soil is than to really get your hands dirty. Dig in and pick some up, smell it, does it smell like dirt? It should have a clean earthy scent, if it smells sour then you may want to rethink planting in it. Play with the dirt, add a little water and see how the soil bonds with it. Remember making mud pies? When was the last time you did this?

Have you allowed life's frustrations to build up? Find a yard with weeds and begin pulling them out with your hands. By the end your finger tips will be sore with little cuts and your joints possibly achy but your mental outlook will be brighter. The weeds are gone along with some of those frustrations.

Back to my original posting message, I am proud of my hands and nails, they show my love for rich alive soil. And as we say in the nursery.........

We sell soil, Dirt is what's under your fingernails. Go out and get dirty then let me know how you feel.

Salvia Mexicana Limelight

My favorite color is beginning to burst on a Mexican Salvia called 'Limelight'. This plant can have spikes up to 6' tall with the plant's width around 2-3'. Full sun to bright shade, regular water. I love the chartreuse spikes with violet-blue tips.

Just received in stock for this weekend. You can have one in your garden for just $4.99, a real bargain when I did some research on the internet and found it on other sites for almost twice as much.

Watermelon Palm

Just a few months ago as we were removing our green house, as I tell everyone, the termites were tired of holding it up, I found some palms not looking very happy. My first thought was to toss them but when I read up on them I decided to cut them back, feed them and see what may happen.
And wow I am impressed. What I have is Chambeyronia Macrocarpa, common name Watermelon Palm.
Within the last couple of weeks new fronds have begun growing and opening up, they are a beautiful color, one you will want to see in person. As the fronds get older they turn green yet in the beginning are beautifully reddish.
I'm so happy I nursed them back, and it didn't take much, just a trimming some organic food and fresh air. I believe there are only a couple left and if I was you and had any interest in unusual plants this is one you will want to put in your collection.

Vegetable Garden Contest

All organic contains chicken manure, earthworm castings, bag guano, kelp and more. Mix it into your soil and your vegetable garden will produce more vegetables with real vegetable taste. What a beautiful Sunday we had last weekend, following a rainy and blistery Saturday. It was nice to have some of you come in and ask about the herbs I had written about in my previous blog. Continuing with my findings in this blog I'll cover Flax, Hyssop, and Sorrel. First let me say that I am not trained in herbs what I'm posting is from researching on the internet, please don't read my writings and assume I am recommending any medicinal remedies.

Flax, Linum usitatissimum, also known as linseed. An annual herb with grey green leaves which produce sky blue flowers in the summer. After the plant has flowered you will find capsules which contain shiny, oval and flat seeds. These seeds are dried and used in various ways. Crushed, the flax seed may be mixed into breakfast cereal for the treatment of constipation. When crushed and mixed into a poultice (soft moist mass) it is known to be effective in local inflammations, such as boils, and eczema.
Now how sweet does this little flower look?

Hyssop, Hyssopus officinalis. evergreen bushy herb which can grow up to 2', square stem, linear leaves. The flower tops are used medicinally in teas. As a culinary herb it is used in broths and salads.
Look for the blooms to appear June to October, depending on your climate.
Plant in a warm area, keep moist until established then they do better with a dryer soil.

Sorrel, Rumex sanguineus.
Grown as a foliage plant due to it's unusual coloration. Plant in full sun and provide regular watering, do not overwater. The young leaves are the edible parts and you eat them as you would spinach. Cut the flower stalks off and more energy will go into producing larger foliage clumps of sword shaped leaves highlighted by red veining.

This morning I'll be picking fresh basil for tonight's dinner, and if the sorrel plants look big enough maybe pull a few leaves to add to the salad. Fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruit from your own gardens just taste so much better.

Unusual Herbs

As I fill up the Herb tables at the nursery I am learning more and more. This week I brought in some herbs based upon customer request and also because the names were different. One such different one on the table this week is Hamburg Parsley. When I first saw it I thought it was hamburger parsley and I envisioned very large leafs that fit on a hamburger. The botanical name for this parsley variety is Petroselinum crispum Tuberosum. It has been described as a cross between parsley and parsnips. The root is what is used and the taste was described to me as a cross between celery and parsley - definitely tasty. You can slice it raw or cook it in soups.

Parsley is rich in vitamins, minerals and compounds which clear toxins from the body. Theories of how parsley gets its name vary. One says it was named for rocks in the Greek gardens, "petros". It is a biennel but most of us grow it as an annual. It is best used fresh so keep it growing in a pot handy to the kitchen, clip if often to promote new growth. You do know why they put in on your plate in restaurants right? Natural breath freshner.

Another leafy herb on the table this week is Chervil, which when I researched it found it has a family alliance to cow parsley, Anthriscus sylvestris. Well Chervil resembles flat leaf parsley the aroma and taste suggest tarragon & fennel. If you enjoy French cooking you certainly want Chervil in your herb garden. Use the leaves to enhance white fish, eggs, soups and salads. When adding to cooked foods add it near the end so as not to overcook the flavor.

An herb which you either welcome into your herb garden or dispise the smell of. Epazote, Chenopodium ambrosoides. This Mexican herb has a very strong taste, it has been used in Mexican cuisine dating back to the Aztecs who used it for not only cooking but medicinal purposes. Used in moderation it may help relieve gassiness that comes from eating beans, thus it is cooked in with the beans.

All of these are on the tables this weekend, I'll post more varieties in a few days, but now it's off to work. See you at the nursery and remember we do have umbrellas so you can shop in the rain.

San Diego's liquid sunshine

Went to bed last night without the rains having come, and woke up this morning to the sound of it hitting our bedroom window. Looking out at it now is a welcome sight as we know the rain makes all the plants in the nursery happier. Plus the weather report says it is going to stop raining in about 15 minutes. Since it was a few hours late in coming I'm not sure it will stop on time. But you can be assured when it does stop later this morning the nursery is be ready for you.

And by ready believe me when I say ready. Fausto did the buying this last week and he bought for spring weather. The vegetable table became tables, the front displays are bursting with geraniums in all colors, and varieties. Chamaelaucium uncinatum, botanical name for Waxflower, are budding and showing some color. Plant these in your garden for a hardy drought-tolerant flowering plant which when cut last for a long time in your arrangements.

Right about now you will begin seeing burst of soft pink flowers with a strong fragrance, this is the Pink Jasmine, Jasminum polyanthum. This is an evergreen vine which originated in China. The abundance of flowers is stunning. Plant it where you want an impact of color and fragrance. If pink is your choice in the garden you will want to see the Pink Magnolias, they are budded and flowering. And if you want to know what this plant will look like when mature you can see one just 2 doors west of the nursery in the front yard of a home for sale. I hope the new owners don't take out this tree it helps us sell alot of trees. (no picture attached just drive by for the real thing)

Red Aloe came in yesterday and I learned that if you give it more water than not it will show more green, very pretty specimens available this weekend.

Sunshine and your edibles

When walking this morning I actually had to wear my sunglasses, what a welcome change from the last couple of weeks.
We are so fortunate to live in a city with such beautiful weather for most of the year. Once our rain was over everything looked so clean. While the people on the east coast once their snows are done they will still have a mess to deal with.

This year we are celebrating our 100th anniversary, and Reina dressed up when we told her about it.

The biggest celebration will happen during the spring. Since the nursery was first opened by Kate Sessions there have been many who have walked through our nursery and found just the right plant for their garden. A good many had brought their own children in, who are now bringing their grandchildren in, and taught them the many benefits of gardening. Whether it was done out of a necessity to grow food, to beautify your home, or as exercise we are glad you have chosen us. "Life's a Garden, Dig It!" has been our motto for many years and it really is true. Our newest slogan is Dirt....where it begins. As Fausto tells us without good soil no matter what you plant you will have a harder job getting it to grow.

As part of our celebration we want to hear your story. Please send them to me either via email toni@missionhillsnursery.com, mail, or drop them by the nursery. If you have photos or other memorabilia please include these. If something you want to share is not able to be copied we will return them after our celebration.

Each month we will select one story to post at the nursery and the winning entry will receive a $50.00 shopping spree, winning story will be selected by our staff and our key affiliates.

Getting There

We are about 70% restocked at the nursery, our upper lot is blooming with winter color, citrus trees some flowering some fruiting. Our pottery department has been moved to make your shopping easier, or maybe harder since you will be able to see more choices in one spot, oh and you thought just running to the nursery to pick up a pot was a simple chore.

We've left open an area to be used as our planting area when bareroot roses and dormant trees arrive. Here is a photo of them in their fields being harvested.

Our first order is due to arrive early January. You can pick up a list of our 2010 rose selections at the nursery or on our website. If you want to know which stone fruit trees and other ornamental trees are coming in just drop me an email and I'll send it over.

Rain and more Rain

Rain has been falling all day and even though not many of you are venturing out to the nursery those brave soles are finding it very peaceful. I've enjoyed walking thru the plants during a rain, they seem to be singing and reaching up as they stretch their limbs. The cats are hiding inside while little boys splash in the mud and little girls scream with delight. Such a welcome sight after so many months of dry. Let's hope the ground is able to absorb most of it instead of having it run off into the drains and out into the ocean.

Now that we've gotten our first rain you may be wishing you had purchased that Rain Tank while they were on sale last month. Many of you did buy and we should receive them in the nursery by the 14th. If you didn't buy last month but still want to get one installed before the winter rains stop you can still order yours, turn around time is about 2-3 weeks, you won't want to wait too long or you could miss out on Mother Nature helping you water your garden this spring.

Fresh Christmas Trees

Our first load of fresh cut Christmas trees is on the lot at Mission Hills Nursery. Juan, Enrique, and Fernando have been busy getting them ready to be sent out to homes and businesses this weekend. The fragrance of the season has begun to fill the neighborhood, while the warm cinnamon pine cones fill the inside of our nursery.

This picture gives you an idea of the beauty of our Poinsettias, you will want to come in and see them for yourself. They are stunning and vivid, so clean that more than one customer thought they were artificial. This weekend we have them in Red and White, but in another week you will have more color choices.

Strelitzia reginae Mandela's Gold

Fausto loves to research different plants to bring into the nursery. Some come in ready to sell while others we have to grow and wait. The wait is over on a beautiful plant which we grew from seed. A Yellow Bird of Paradise, the seeds were brought over from South Africa and the first crop is just beginning to bloom. While Fausto was out taking a photo of the bloom one of our nursery bees, and you know we have many, landed on the plant.

Strelitzia 'Mandela's Gold' marks the first time a yellow Bird of Paradise will grow true from seed. Usually they will cross pollinated by the more common orange Bird of Paradise. At the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, in South Africa, the curator had access to 7 yellow Bird of Paradise plants and spent the next 20+ years hand-pollinating them with each other to increase the stock. Their first yellow strelitzia introduced to the trade was released under the name 'Kirstenbosch Gold'. In 1996, they were given permission to re-name it in honor of Nelson Mandela.

'Mandela's Gold' has 3 yellow sepals and 3 deep purple petals that sit on top as the crest of the bird's head. 'Mandela's Gold' grows to about 4-6' and needs warm, tropical like conditions, even indoors.

Trick or Treat

Container Seminar

Are you envious of the containers you see planted at your friend's home? Do you have limited gardening space? Or has it become harder to get down on your hands and knees to dig in the soil? You will then want to come to Mission Hills Nursery on Saturday November 7, 2009 for a seminar and step by step how to plant container gardens.

Kristi and China will demonstrate how to pull together a few different containers for Fall. You will then be able to ask them to shop with you for a look that will make your friends jealous.

Seminar is FREE and begins at 11:30 am. If you have a container at home you really like bring it to the seminar and plant it at the nursery after you've gotten some tips. This way you can play with the look before you actually plant it. Your plant, soil, and container purchases will be discounted 20%.

I was reading the San Diego Floral Associations 100th year book and there were a few ads which our founder, Kate Session had run back in the early 1900's. One which caught my attention was her Fall Clearance Sale and I decided to follow her.

Fall Vegetables

I know it still feels like summer yet we are coming upon the time to begin planting our fall vegetable gardens. And how spoiled are we in San Diego to be able to plant tomatoes which will produce during the winter months?

We have begun receiving our winter varieties along with lettuces and kales. Over the next couple of weeks our vegetable area will grow with choices.

Birdbaths

Birds enjoy eating their meals (insects), in your garden along with napping in your trees. Yet not many of us provide them with a place to bath. Yet it can be something quite simple as a terra cotta saucer
to elaborate stone or glazed birdbaths. Just remember not too deep, and they need a ledge to perch on. Keep it clean and your garden birds will sing in their showers.

Pourpier or Portulaca oleracea

I had a special request for Purslane also known as Pourpier in French and Verdolaga in Spanish this last week and I was able to bring some in from our herb grower Pearson's Gardens. I learned this annual can be enjoyed in stir-fry, salads, and other culinary dishes along with just being enjoyed as a summer flower in the garden.

August 11th Tuesday's Tasting

This Tuesday's Tasting is going to be crisp whites. To compliment these whites your purchase of white flowers from the 5" perennial tables will be discounted 20%. One of our newest white flowers on the tables is the Clitoria double 'white lady'. Double pea like blossoms cover a delicate vine that grows 36", it excels in heat and humidity and will grow in full sun to part shade. Plant it in a container with a trellis or let it trail over a window box or out of a hanging basket. Keep the soil moist. Other white flowers which are blooming now are

Euphoribia Diamond Frost, a continuously blooming flower which enjoys both full sun and shade. Makes a statement when planted by itself but really shines when used in a mixed container.

Bacopa which is considered a perennial here in San Diego gracefully drapes down the sides of containers or spreads across the soil surface in garden beds. Grows well in sun along the coast and would prefer shade inland, requires regular watering.

Tastings are from 3:00 - 5:00, it's not about the taste it's about getting ideas from the displays and spending time with your friends. See you in the nursery.

New Exciting Arrivals

Yesterday and today trucks were unloaded with product we haven't had in stock for awhile and we are excited about. First let me describe for you the wonderful scent you will find when you enter the upper lot. Oil from the Michelia champaca, Alba tree is used in the making of Joy Perfume. Joy Perfume is made by the same company which gives us Channel No. 5. This evergreen tree can grow 10-20' tall and as wide. The white flowers bloom most often in the summer and winter yet also intermittently throughout the rest of the year.

Another specimen which you will see when you first enter is the Allamanda cathartica, Golden Trumpet vine. This evergreen vine can grow thru trees and reach 50'. Or if you pinch it back you may maintain it as a freestanding shrub. The yellow trumpet flowers are 5" wide and 3" long and appear nearly year round. Loves heat and needs it for proper growth and bloom, does not tolerate cold.

Summer time pots in different shapes, sizes, and bright colors.
Orchid pots with the holes in the sides, and self watering pots for African Violets. Plus some really fun small glazed bowls to plant up for your patio tables. Oh yes and speaking of patio tables, we do have umbrella pots in stock.

With the cut backs in water your garden birds are looking for new places to bath so why not give them a new birdbath this summer? We just unloaded blue and green ones which are just the right size for our feathered friends, and if you are worried about wasting water, use the water that would run down the drain while you are waiting for it to warm up.

If you haven't looked at the card rack you will want to stop and see the beautiful photo cards which are done by our local photographer Meredith French. Some gorgeous photos of flowers and insects. Give the card that is worth framing, or pick up a few for yourself and enjoy nature in it's finest show.

Most Unusual Flower

What is that flower growing on the back of your building? I don't know how many times we've been asked this question and every time the person asking either loves the vine or is disgusted by it. Aristolochia gigantea or Dutchman's Pipe. Fast growing vine that can grow 15-20' tall has been spreading across our back building for years, even with repeated cuttings this vine is a conversation piece. Oddly shaped flowers are really petal-less calyces that open about 6" wide and hang nearly 12" long. Hardy vine to about 30 degrees, plant in a sunny spot with summer shade for a more stunning show.

4th of July Celebration

What an amazing community we work in, and the spirit really shined thru this last 4th of July. A parade of the neighborhood showed as many people got together to walk, ride, skate, and push their way along the streets, starting at Pioneer Park.

Well we all didn't walk the route we did send a representative from the Nursery. Claudia pushed our "float" and we are proud to say it was the first float entry, watch for more next year.
After the parade there were many fun activities back at the park, from hula hoop contests, to balloon toss, and cake for everyone.

At the nursery Enrique fired up the BBQ and Fernando was our Hot Dog chef. He cooked up hot dogs from Sausage King and everyone really enjoyed them, if you haven't tried them before you need to. They have just the right about of spices, and crispy outside so they crunch when you bite.

Thank you to everyone who helped put this event on, we look forward to the next couple of weeks of concerts in the park, Friday nights. Bring your blankets, chairs, food and friends.

Zinfandel Tasting

This Tuesday July 7th we will be tasting Zinfandels, red and white. Did you know the same grape is used to make both? The difference being the skin is removed from the grape when making the white variety, thus you get a lighter and sweeter wine.
What connection is this week's tasting to the nursery? Grapes of course are on sale, you may not make your own wine but you can turn a portion of your garden into a mini vineyard or Tuscan village.

Fruit Sale and Sangria

Tuesday June 30th we'll be celebrating summer and our fruit tree sale at our Tuesday Tasting. Come in and try White Sangria. Remember tasting time is from 3:00 - 5:00 so come early and enjoy your beverage while shopping. Yesterday's tasting we ran out of the crisp La Crema Chardonnay right at 5pm and everyone seemed to enjoy it along with the basil pesto. Crispy and spicy went hand in hand.

Half Price Rose Sale

All roses in stock, yes every size color style and fragrance are on SALE.

We have cut back some but with Enrique's care they are already showing new growth and another round of flowers are budding and blooming. We are not able to ship any more this year but you can pick up a great bargain by coming into the nursery. We need to make room for an area of the nursery that has begun to grow very rapidly, California Native Plants. Watch for this area to expand over the next couple of weeks. It will be located up by the cactus and succulents which also are getting more nursery space.

Come in early for the best selections, if you don't think you have space for a rose how about one in a container? With the right size pot, soil, and fertilizer it's possible. Come in and ask Enrique for his recommendations.

Where the Unusual is the Usual

In our earlier days we would always describe our nursery as 'where the unusual is the usual' while that hasn't changed, we still pride ourselves on having unusual and unique plants and other gardening items. This month I've brought in something very 'unusual' because it's not gardening related. Yet because of the uniqueness I wanted to make it available to all of you. The photos don't do the necklace/bracelet/belt justice, you need to pick it up and try it out for yourself. What you leave your home with may not be what you come back with in regards to the design and how you are wearing it. We found this item on our trip to South Africa last year and our friend was able to get some sent over, we have seen them in jewlery stores and craft shows for much more than what we are offering them to you for.

Exciting New Book at the Nursery

We received a phone call late last week from Bunny Henderson, the author of "Digging It" How to garden your way out of the recession. Bunny's son lives in Mission Hills so she was familiar with our nursery and realized our saying of "Life's a Garden, Dig It!" seemed to fit perfectly with her book. Josh dropped by with a copy of the book and we all found it to be a great item to bring in this week for Garden Walk. Learn how to plan your vegetable garden, gather the right tools, build raised beds or garden in containers. The book will teach you how to fertilize, water, and most importantly 'harvest' the rewards of your labor. We are expecting the book to be in stock on Saturday, just in time for Mission Hills Garden Walk. Next time Bunny is in town we will arrange for her to come into the nursery, you can bring your book back in and have her sign it.

Rose Sale

Have you seen the beautiful roses blooming at the nursery this last week? It seems as if they have all come to life, the colors are vibrant. Enrique is doing a great job of keeping the pest at bay, he keeps them clean and moving around to showcase those with the most blooms.

When he sees blooms that are almost done he clips them and brings them inside where we are stripping them down to just the petals.

Happy 20th Anniversary

April 1, 1989 we became the proud owners of Mission Hills Nursery.

As I reflect back on those first years, my husband was coming home physically tired but ever so happy as he had fulfilled one of his dreams, to own his own nursery. The community welcomed us and taught us what they were looking for in a nursery. I believe we have all grown to love each other and respect each other. We could not do what we do day in and day out if not for the support we receive from every one of our customers. Some days can be quite challenging but then a small child will come in holding their grandfather's hand and buy a package of seeds. The joy in their eyes knowing they will be "gardening" is as the commercial says Priceless.

Many of you have watched our own children grow into adults, just as we have watched yours. Gone are the days of Tiger jumping around on the bags of soil, now he drives the forklift full of soil and Kristi pulling all the pretty flowers to bring me a bouquet. In place are the days in which Fausto and I don't have to show up every day, Tiger is there working with you now and putting his own style on the nursery. Kristi gives me moral support when I need it and still brings me bouquets.

We truly are blessed to be in the community we are in. We appreciate each day talking with those who drive from all parts of San Diego county to garden with us. We have some of the best employees who also love sharing their experience and knowledge with each of you. For those of you who work a stressful job every day, just stopping by and wandering around the nursery is a form of therapy, we are glad to be here for you.

Garden Walk Season

Garden Walk Season and the choices are growing each year. The one event we are proudest to partner with is Mission Hills Garden Club's. Their annual walk this year is on May 9th. An easy way to remember their date is each year it falls on the Saturday before Mother's Day. What a fun way to spend time with your mother and or friends who are mothers.

But if one is not enough there are many more, from Pt. Loma and the beach areas, to the South Bay and East County. With every event having a different theme and different gardens you can be assured you won't see any 2 alike. Some homes are professionally landscaped while others are done by the homeowners.

We do have tickets on sale at the nursery for the Mission Hills and Pt. Loma walks, information for all the others can be found on line. Your booklet from the Mission Hills walk holds a valuable coupon for the nursery so remember to look for it.

Get out your walking shoes, sunscreen, hat and grab your fellow gardeners the next 6-8 weeks will keep you inspired.

Orchid Sale

This morning I woke up to birds singing so that tells me today is going to be a beautiful day. We are bursting with spring plants at the nursery, just yesterday we received 6 different varieties of salvias. Arctotis Pink Sugar is in stock and if you remember last year it usually sold out every weekend. When the sun shines on the flower it lights up like a painting.

Orchids, they can be exotic and intimidating. Treat yourself this week by picking one up at the nursery we have every orchid in stock on sale. Don't think of it as something you can't take care of, when they are blooming it's simple, water once a week and sit back for 6+ weeks and enjoy their beauty. When you consider how much more enjoyment you can get out of each orchid the cost is much less than buying cut flowers each week.

What's Blooming? Magnolias

What is that tree with the beautiful pink flowers blooming next door to the nursery? This is a question we get asked at this time of year every year. The answer is Magnolia x soulangiana 'Alexandrina'. This truly beautiful specimen puts on a flower show that is hard to beat. We have them in stock as I write this, but with the sunny weather people are coming into the nursery and we do sell out each year.
Along with the 'Alexandrina' we have other varieties of Magnolias, including Tiger's favorite Magnolia x soulangiana Black Tulip. Black Tulip gets 15' to 20' tall and 6' to 10' wide and blooms deep burgundy flowers in the spring. May be used in containers.
Looking for a majestic tree? I recommend the Majestic Beauty Southern Magnolia Magnolia grandiflora this evergreen tree has extra large glossy dark green leaves and cup shaped white blooms. The pyramidal shapes makes this a good choice for a shade tree it can get up to 40' and about 15' to 20' wide.

Toni's pick for the first week of March - Grapes

All grapes in stock are on sale this week. Need to know how to grow grapes? Here are 5 easy steps to get you started.

1. select the type of grape you will use, either eating grape or wine grape.
2. in your garden find an area which gets full sun and ample heat for the best fruit production.
3. amend your soil as deep as possible with E.B. Stone Planting Compost, grapes like loose fast draining soil.
4. be sure you have a trellis or other type of support for the vines, you want to keep the fruit off the ground.
5. your grapes are produced on older wood so when pruning during the dormant season cut the smooth stems and keep the older ones which are rougher.
